Peter Fortune MP for Bromley and Biggin Hill visited SpaMedica Bromley on Friday 6th March to meet clinical teams and discuss how independent sector capacity is supporting NHS ophthalmology services locally and nationally.
SpaMedica is one of the UK’s largest independent sector providers of NHS-funded ophthalmology care, specialising in cataract surgery and YAG laser capsulotomy. It plays an important role in supporting the UK Government and the NHS to unlock additional capacity and reduce waiting times.
During the visit, Mr Fortune was welcomed by Chelsea Jenkins, Hospital Manager at Bromley, and Lisa Jordan, SpaMedica’s Chief Commercial Officer and discussed the current financial and operating challenges affecting local Integrated Care Boards across the UK, including locally in Bromley . He toured the hospital’s clinical facilities and met colleagues delivering care to local residents.
Speaking after the visit Peter said: “It was hugely valuable to visit SpaMedica Bromley and see first-hand the role it plays in supporting NHS patients in our local area. Cataract surgery is a highly effective procedure that restores independence and quality of life for thousands of people each year.
"Whilst the funding backdrop for NHS care remains challenged, forcing many integrated care boards like NHS South East London to introduce minimum waiting times that slow down the flow of patients, it is important that policies are carefully assessed to ensure they support timely access to care and progress in reducing waiting lists.”
